Virtualisation Engineer

Overview

We are looking for a Virtualisation Engineer to deliver hands-on engineering support to the OpNET programme, designing, building and automating VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) platforms.

The role focuses on enterprise virtualisation and software-defined infrastructure, including VCF components (vSphere, NSX, vSAN, VCF Operations, VPC, VKS), supporting full lifecycle delivery from design through to build, integration, automation, and operational handover within secure or regulated environments.

You will be on site 4 days per week with one day per week working from home

Specific job skills

• Design, deploy, and manage enterprise virtualisation platforms based on VMware VCF.
• Implement and manage core components including vSphere, NSX, vSAN, VCF Operations, VPC, and VKS.
• Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions to enable automated, repeatable platform deployments.
• Build API-driven automation for provisioning, configuration, and lifecycle management.
• Support lifecycle management of platforms, including build, upgrade, patching, and scaling.
• Integrate virtualisation platforms with enterprise services including networking, DNS, identity, and DevOps toolchains.
• Translate architectural designs into automated, deployable solutions aligned to programme standards.
• Ensure solutions align with secure-by-design principles and organisational security requirements.
• Produce key artefacts including LLDs, build guides, and runbooks.
• Support system integration, testing, and operational handover.
• Conduct change impact assessments and support risk identification.
• Contribute to automation, standardisation, and continuous improvement of platform capabilities.
• Provide ongoing support to ensure platform stability, performance, and scalability.

Essential skills and experience

• Strong experience with VMware virtualisation platforms (vSphere, ESXi, vCenter).
• Experience with VMware Cloud Foundation and SDDC components (NSX, vSAN, VCF Operations).
• Strong automation experience using tools such as PowerCLI, Terraform, Ansible, or SaltStack.
• Experience developing Infrastructure as Code and API-driven automation solutions.
• Understanding of enterprise networking and underpinning services (e.g. DNS, load balancing).
• Experience integrating platforms with DevOps toolchains and CI/CD pipelines.
• Knowledge of platform security and hardening best practices.
• Experience delivering within secure or regulated environments.
• Ability to produce technical documentation (LLDs, build guides, runbooks).
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills.
• Must hold, or be eligible to obtain, UK Security Clearance (SC).

Desired skills and experience

• Experience with Kubernetes on VCF (VKS) or container platforms.
• Knowledge of hybrid cloud and multi-platform environments.
• Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code best practices and GitOps approaches.
• Experience with backup, disaster recovery, and platform resilience solutions.
• Agile delivery experience and use of Atlassian tools.
• Relevant certifications (e.g. VCP, VCAP, VMware Cloud Foundation Specialist).
