Overview

Whiteflare is seeking experienced Safety Consultants at varying levels to support safety-critical Defence programmes across the full project lifecycle for a high calibre Consultancy Firm. This role will provide specialist safety engineering advice, through-life safety support and trusted consultancy to MOD, DE&S, prime contractors and wider Defence partners.

Specific job skills

The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of safe, available and sustainable military capability by leading and supporting safety reviews, hazard analysis, risk assessment, ALARP arguments, hazard management and safety case development. They will produce and review technical documentation, provide assurance on safety approaches, and engage confidently with stakeholders across customer, supplier and project teams.

Applicants should bring strong experience in system safety engineering within high-integrity sectors such as Defence, aerospace, transport or nuclear, alongside a sound understanding of safety legislation, regulation and standards. Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement and analytical problem-solving skills are essential, as is eligibility to hold UK Security Clearance.

Essential skills and experience

  • Level 4 qualification in an Engineering discipline (e.g., System Safety, Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, or related field).
  • Strong understanding and experience of the application of safety principles, processes, and techniques
  • Holds, or is eligible to hold UK Security Clearance (SC as a minimum; DV may be required depending on programme).
  • Experience delivering Safety projects within high-integrity industries (defence, aerospace, transport, nuclear, or other).
  • Proven expertise in system safety engineering such as hazard identification, safety case development, risk management, safety assurance etc.
  • Strong understanding of safety legislation, regulation, and standards.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
  • Analytical and pragmatic problem-solving approach, with attention to detail and risk awareness.
  • Experience working within the UK Defence sector, preferably in the MOD, DE&S, or Defence industry programmes

Desired skills and experience

  • Consultancy experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a Safety or Engineering discipline or equivalent experience.
  • Training/qualification(s) in specific Safety related discipline(s) (e.g. Fault Tree, Eng Workbench, Bow tie)
  • Experience working with Front Line Commands (Air/Land/Maritime), user communities, or operational stakeholders.
  • Experience of working the civil air environment.
  • Knowledge of related disciplines such as environmental safety, software safety, reliability, human factors, or cyber safety.
  • Commercial Awareness: Ability to contribute to bids, tenders, and technical proposals.
  • Have, or are working towards IEng professional registration with a recognised body (e.g. IMechE, IET, SaRS).
